Title: Ontology-Based Data Access for Interoperable Energy Scenarios

Abstract:

Researchers in the field of energy systems employ various assumptions to explore potential future scenarios. The outcomes of these investigations could differ significantly based on the assumptions used. As a result, comparing scenarios is an increasingly challenging task because different organizations often use their own unique data models, terminology, and standards. Therefore, data integration becomes essential for providing a convenient way to compare quantitative outcomes. But integrating data using relational databases is inefficient and expensive due to the need for preprocessing and transferring data to new relational tables. Furthermore, for an effective comparison, it is crucial to utilize a shared vocabulary among all parties involved. To overcome these challenges, in this talk, we explore the use of a Virtual Knowledge Graph (VKG) that allows for a quantitative comparison between energy scenarios. The data in a VKG is not materialised, but rather virtualized. This is accomplished through the use of semantic mappings that connect a domain ontology with the data tables stored in relational databases.
