Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems
4th Workshop, August 21 - 24, 2002, London, Ontario, Canada
|

Contents
The Workshop
DCFS is the successor workshop to and the merger of
- DCAGRS - Descriptional Complexity of Automata, Grammars and
Related Structures, and
- FDSR - Formal Descriptions and Software Reliability.
DCAGRS was previously held in Magdeburg (1999), London (2000) and
Vienna (2001). FDSR was previously held in Paderborn (1998), Boca
Raton (1999) and San Jose (2000).
DCFS 2002 will be jointly organized by the
IFIP Working Group 1.2
on Descriptional Complexity and the
University of Western Ontario.
It will take place immediately before
TCS 2002 - Theoretical Computer Science 2002
(Montreal, Canada, August 25-30, 2002),
and will thus allow attending both DCFS and TCS .
The first
lecture of TCS 2002 will start in the morning of Monday, August
26. So Sunday, August 25, can be used for travel from London to
Montreal.
The goal of the workshop is to present the state of the art and to provide a
forum for the exchange of new results.
Topics
Submissions for DCFS 2002 are invited, concerning the
descriptional complexity of formal systems and structures (and its
applications).
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- various measures of descriptional complexity of automata,
grammars, languages and of related systems
- trade-offs between descriptional complexity and mode of
operation
- circuit complexity of Boolean functions and related measures
- succinctness of description of (finite) objects
- descriptional complexity in resource-bounded or
structure-bounded environments
- structural complexity
- descriptional complexity of formal systems for applications
(e.g. software reliability, software and hardware testing,
modelling of natural languages)

Submissions
Authors are invited to submit papers (in English) concerning the
descriptional complexity of formal systems and structures (and
its applications). The submissions should not exceed 12 pages
and should provide sufficient detail to allow the program
committee to evaluate its validity, quality and relevance. If
appropriate, detailed proofs should be attached as an appendix.
Please submit your contribution via email as a postscript file
(preferably as body of the email, not as an attachment)
by June 05, 2002, to
dcfs@csd.uwo.ca
Preproceedings - Instructions for Authors
- Preproceedings will be distributed at the conference.
- Final versions for the preproceedings should be submitted by e-mail to
dcfs@csd.uwo.ca
by Friday, August 9.
-
We prefer to receive the postscript file as the main body of the message and not as an attachment.
- Authors should follow the instructions:
- postscript format (not eps, not pdf),
- no page size or format information (so that we will not have printer problems here),
- no colour,
- no page numbers,
- not exceed 15 pages.
Proceedings
As in previous years, it is planned to publish selected papers in
a special journal issue.
Registration information
-
The registration fee is $ 130.00 (Canadian) for early registration and
$ 160.00 (Canadian) for late registration. To keep the process simple,
the following procedure is used.
-
For early registration please send email or fax with the relevant information
to dcfs@csd.uwo.ca or +1-519-661-3515 (c/o DCFS, Ms. M. Hoeberechts)
by
8 August, 2002. You do not need to send money in advance, but will
pay your registration fee in cash upon arrival. We are using an honour
system by which early registration implies that you will indeed pay the
fee.
-
Late registration is possible any time and requires payment of the late
fee in cash upon arrival.
-
To keep the costs low, we cannot accept credit cards or cheques.
-
The registration desk will be open from 16.00 to 20.00 on 21 August in
room 320 of Middlesex College and from 8.30 to 12.00 on 22 August in front
of the conference room 105b of Middlesex College. At other times, registrations
will be handled by the conference organizers on an indivudual basis.
-
The registration fee includes the following:
Wine-and-cheese reception in room 320 of Middlesex College on 21
August, starting at 16.00 and ending at 20.00. Excursion
to the Rock-Glen Conservation Area (waterfall, fossils) with a barbecue
on 23 August (whole afternoon). Pre-proceedings volume of
the workshop. Drinks and light food during the conference breaks.
-
No other meals are included. Information on where to get breakfast (if
not included in the hotel price), lunches or dinners will be distributed
with the conference material. Regarding breakfast and lunch, the Club of
Graduate Students in Middlesex College would be a convenient place for
anybody enjoying the atmosphere of a pub.
-
The fee for accompanying persons is $40 (Canadian), which includes the
reception and the excursion with barbecue.
